Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC), headquartered in Birmingham, AL, operates Southern Company's six nuclear reactors at three locations in Georgia and Alabama. In addition, SNC is managing construction of two new nuclear reactors in Georgia.

We currently have a position available in our Accounting department located at our corporate office in Birmingham, AL. This position is an integral part of a team that performs traditional accounting, billing, and financial & regulatory reporting for each of our plants across our fleet. Although based in our corporate office, the position provides accounting support to each plant location.

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field of study.

  • CPA or CPA candidate highly preferred. An advanced degree is desired.

  • Minimum of 2 years of recent general accounting experience (public accounting experience preferred); including experience in financial reporting and financial statement preparation. Knowledge of the following:

  • Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

  • Securities and Exchange Commission rules and regulations

  • Sarbanes-Oxley 404 compliance requirements

  • Federal Energy Regulatory Commission accounting rules and regulations.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills, including working with people at all levels, and across multiple functions and multiple company locations.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Ensure Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC) accounting is performed in accordance with GAAP and regulatory requirements.

  • Prepare monthly and quarterly journal vouchers, account analyses, and account reconciliations in a timely and accurate manner. Ensure all company accounting transactions are thoroughly documented, meet a standard of re-performance and can be easily followed.

  • Support monthly billing process to ensure activities are performed in a timely and accurate manner, and that all financial reporting requirements are met.

  • Maintain an effective system of internal controls for all Southern Nuclear financial transactions.

  • Perform accounting research and benchmarking to ensure compliance and best practices.

  • Cultivate a questioning attitude to gain and maintain a thorough understanding of accounting operations, computer systems and applications, and Company policies and procedures.

  • Support the SNC Accounting organization's efforts in pursuit of organizational excellence.
