JOB SUMMARY :
This position is for Lead Engineer assigned to Southern Nuclear Company’s (SNC) Nuclear Fuel & Analysis department located at the corporate headquarters in Birmingham, AL. SNC’s parent company, Southern Company, was just recognized as #2 in the 2022 Forbes ranking of America’s Best Large Employers. Currently this role is a hybrid of on-site and remote work.
This position will report to the BWR Fuel Engineering Manager. SNC's corporate BWR Fuel Engineering department is responsible for nuclear fuel and core design, core management, operational support, reload safety analysis (e.g., UFSAR Chapter 15 events), and reload licensing to support two BWR nuclear units. The BWR Fuel Engineering department also works closely with the Southern Nuclear Operating Company's corporate Safety Analysis department. In addition to the responsibilities above, this position may be requested to support the SNC Safety Analysis department performing analyses such as evaluations of containment response, radiological releases, and transient analyses on the entire SNC fleet of BWRs and PWRs associated with assumed accidents and events to ensure compliance.
In 2018, the SNC BWR Fuel Engineering department completed an effort to bring the performance of core reload design and licensing analyses utilizing fuel supplier methods "in-house." This permits an unprecedented level of utility ownership and technical depth in the areas of core design and reload licensing and is an excellent development opportunity for individual professional growth. Lead Engineers must possess the ability to create a compelling vision for the future based on direction from company leadership, lead and influence diverse teams, elicit input from stakeholders, and develop and implement a project plan. Lead Engineers are a recognized leader and authority in the company in a broad area of specialization. They anticipate and clearly define appropriate technical approaches and solutions to complex problems. They participate in formulating strategic decisions and recommendations that impact key technical issues across the organization. Individuals in these positions must demonstrate creativity, foresight, and mature engineering judgement as they anticipate and solve challenging engineering problems, determine program objectives and requirements, and develop standards and guides for diverse engineering activities. Additionally, this position will be called upon to provide coaching and mentoring to less experienced team members.
A minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required.
An advanced degree in Engineering, or related field with specialties in nuclear fuel and/or safety analysis is preferred.
Degree(s) in Nuclear Engineering is preferred, but not required.
The following experience is required:
- Eight (8) years of nuclear power plant or related industrial experience is required. Ten (10) years of nuclear power plant or related industrial experience is preferred.
The following experiences are highly desired:
Experience with applications of BWR reactor physics.
Experience with BWR fuel and core design, and AOO analysis.
Experience with FSAR Chapter 6 and 15 safety analyses.
Experience with GE-Hitachi (GEH)/Global Nuclear Fuel (GNF) nuclear methods.
Experience with CASMO/SIMULATE methods.
Experience associated with the systems, design, and analysis of entire SNC nuclear fleet of BWRs.
Knowledge and Skills :
Ability to clearly state vision and desired outcomes for projects under your responsibility and control.
Ability to communicate effectively with all levels in the plant and engineering organizations and with external stakeholders (vendors, industry groups, regulatory agencies).
Experience managing development and implementation of complex projects with multiple work phases.
Proven ability to build and sustain strong relationships.
Extensive knowledge of regulatory infrastructure related to energy policy, commercial nuclear reactor operation, and deployment of innovation.
Excellent written and oral communications skills. Comfortable providing and presenting information to all levels of the organization.
Ability to comprehend complex reactor physics/design problems and provide solutions is required.
Demonstrated proficiency in autonomous use of engineering judgement and decision making. Self-starter capable of performing tasks with little supervision or oversight.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES :
BWR Fuel Lead Engineer responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Be responsible for driving for results in key initiatives.
Serve as the single point of contact for communication with internal and external stakeholders on key initiatives.
Provide technical leadership for activities related to nuclear fuel and core design, licensing, and operation.
Provide technical oversight and support to personnel in the Nuclear Fuel and Reactor Engineering functional area for the SNC fleet.
Provide mentoring of less experienced Fuel Engineering personnel.
