Job Highlights

We are looking for experienced electrical and instrumentation and controls engineers. Experience in power generation is desired, but not required. The Electrical Systems Engineer works to ensure the long term reliability of assigned plant system(s). This will require the ability to learn the system to the component level, understand the underlying issues that may reduce reliability, and effectively develop, present and drive the implementation of improvement plans and maintenance strategies. Electrical Systems Engineers also perform causal analyses in response to equipment or system failures.

Job Summary

We are looking for electrical engineers with experience in electrical components and/or systems such as: relays, 480 Volt through 4160 Volt breakers, inverters, battery chargers, batteries, etc.

We are also looking for electrical engineers with experience in instrumentation and controls (i.e.: circuit boards, transmitters, analog controllers, digital controllers, etc.). Engineers at Southern Nuclear may have opportunities to manage special projects. Engineers also typically take key refueling outage assignments. The current climate has presented increased opportunities for advancement to supervisory and management positions.

Southern Nuclear, a subsidiary of Southern Company, manages and operates six nuclear power electric generating plants that provide approximately 20 percent of the electricity used in Alabama and Georgia. Southern Nuclear is leading the nuclear renaissance by building the first new U.S. nuclear reactors in more than 25 years. When completed, the two Westinghouse AP1000 reactors currently under construction at Plant Vogtle will make the facility the largest in the U.S. with four reactors on one site. Job Requirements


B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program or a PE license is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • A background in electrical engineering with working knowledge of applicable discipline codes and standards.

  • An ability to solve problems and make sound engineering decisions based on experience and appropriate industry practices in order to make timely decisions which might impact plant safety and reliability.

  • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate issues and proposed solutions.

  • The position requires the individual to be on-call and available to assist with related troubleshooting and restoration activities.

Preferred Experience

  • 3 or more years’ experience in an engineering role is strongly preferred (nuclear or energy related experience is helpful).

Other Requirements

The successful candidate must meet background screening and NRC Fitness for Duty requirements.

Selected candidate must live within one hour of the SNC Emergency Operations Facility for emergency response availability.
