Southern Nuclear, a subsidiary of Southern Company, manages and operates six nuclear power electric generating plants that provide approximately 20 percent of the electricity used in Alabama and Georgia. Job Summary

This supervisor will lead the Electrical group within the Site Design Department. This position is responsible for initiating, supporting and directing Site Design activities associated with standardization and promoting best practices in the area of their expertise.

This supervisor within Site Design will lead a group of approximately 9 individuals responsible for activities which may include:

  • Providing conceptual designs, minor designs, and design modifications, as well as supporting conceptual design studies and designs contracted to outside engineering firms.

  • Ensuring technical adequacy of products.

  • Interfacing with Stress, Seismic, Fire Protection, and Environmental Qualification groups in Engineering Programs for assigned design changes.

  • Developing cost estimates for assigned design modifications in conjunction with cost estimators.

  • Working with the A/E and the respective site's Plant Health Committee to prioritize and schedule design modifications.

  • Developing specifications and interfacing with vendors for major equipment required to support design modifications, or supporting this work contracted to outside firms.

  • Facilitating design review meetings for assigned design modifications.

  • Updating or developing design calculations and other documents to reflect changes for assigned designs.

  • Initiating Field Change Requests for needed changes to design packages discovered during implementation.

  • Interface with Training, Site Projects, Engineering Support, Maintenance and Operations during development of design changes.

  • Overnight travel up to 25% of the time to conferences, INPO, Southern Nuclear Headquarters, or other sites as required.

  • Stand in for Site Design Manager when needed.

Job Requirements

Educational Requirements:

  • BS in Engineering or PE license is required

Background/Experience Requirements:

  • A total of 8 years of responsible experience in power plant design or operation, of which a minimum of 1 year involves nuclear power plant design or operation is required

  • A maximum of 4 of the 8 required years may be fulfilled by related technical or academic training.

  • 5 years nuclear power related experience preferred

  • Design experience preferred
