Southern Nuclear, headquartered in Birmingham, AL, operates Southern Company's six nuclear reactors at three locations in Georgia and Alabama: two reactors at Plant Vogtle, near Waynesboro, GA; two reactors at Plant Hatch, near Baxley, GA; and two reactors at Plant Farley, near Dothan, AL. In addition, Units 3&4 at Plant Vogtle are currently under construction, with Unit 3 approaching final stages of construction and testing prior to fuel load and power ascension testing. JOB SUMMARY

Provide strategic leadership, vision and establish initiatives for the outage/startup section of the Work Controls department. Coordinate with Work Management Directors and Outage Managers for Fleet alignment. Lead and direct the Work Control outage planning and scheduling coordinators and department representatives.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Planning, scheduling, organizing and executing initial startup refueling, maintenance, and forced outages while maximizing the efficient use of available resources and minimizing the impact to unit safety, reliability, and cost.

  • Providing strategic vision, aligning work priorities and monitoring outage preparation and execution. Monitor key performance indicators.

  • Managing outage milestones such that initiatives are being achieved, milestone product quality meets established standards, and prompt corrective actions are established for recovery, where necessary.

  • Developing a core/base schedule to support long range planning of outages.

  • Strategic oversight and maintenance of the outage risk management program - Phoenix, outage risk assessment and operational risk awareness (ORA).

  • Provide oversight of daily activities to ensure schedule development and outage /startup preparation progress is being made consistent with the outage milestones, testing schedule and management objectives.

  • Ensuring that Nuclear Safety is always a priority during the outage schedule development and outage execution.

  • Benchmarking both inside and outside the fleet to find and implement outage preparation and execution best practices and maintaining an environment of continuous improvement including a robust lessons learned program.

  • Working with Work Controls Peer Team and Fleet counterparts to ensure best practices are being implemented as a Fleet.

  • Implementing the applicable sections of the Site Excellence Plan and the initiatives defined in the refueling outage notebook.

  • Works with the Work Controls Director and Manager to ensure the correct relationship between outage work and daily work is maintained and teamwork is maximized in developing an integrated Cycle Plan that includes online and outage work.

  • Coordinates with the Work Controls Director and Manager to ensure the transitions between outage and online are made as seamlessly as possible.

  • Maintaining Emergency Response Organization (ERO) qualifications current - both personally and direct reports - and participating, as needed.

  • Managing the outage backlog to minimize the aggregate impact to the unit from out-of-service equipment.

  • Coordinating special projects as assigned by the Work Management Director.

  • Assessing the budgetary impact of the Outage Scope and making recommendations to the Management Team on reconciling scope and budget.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable Engineering field.

  • Or current/previous Senior Reactor Operator license or certification required with high school diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience Requirements:

  • A total of 8 years of relevant experience, at least 1 year of which should be nuclear power plant experience.

  • A maximum of 4 years, of these 8 years, may be fulfilled by related technical or academic training.

  • 5 years nuclear plant experience is desired.

  • Applicable experience in operations, maintenance, or work controls is required.

  • Previous leadership experience is desired.
